Hello,
I have a customer that has a Domain that's sole purpose is to service Exchange. The customer was planning on migrating to Office 365 in the near future.
Currently the 2012 r2 domain is in a state that doesn't allow me to use any AD gui tools. The tools do not recognize domain or domain controller. Basically say the domain doesn't exist.
netdom query fsmo works and shows all the fsmo roles on the server
Along the way I did get an error that indicated there is no Global Catalog server (There is only one domain controller)
Sooo before I dive too deep into this I was wondering if it is possible to use any utilities/process to migrated data off of Exchange to another Exchange server in a new forest.
Or perhaps to Office 365.
I found some cool ways to do it if the Exchange server has a functioning domain.... but...
Also, anyone know what may cause this in a domain? DNS issue? If the GC is actually gone is there a way to recover from that? I saw someone mention in a single domain, Sites and Services can be used to check it and recreate the global catalog. In this case sites and services does not start.
I really don't want to spend a lot of time on this domain since it is just a single domain controller and the customer wants to go to Office 365 anyway. But I'm not sure that is possible without functioning domain.
I saw someone post that if you build the domain with the same name, install new exchange server with same name and version, and copy database from old Exchange server to the same place, it will work. Can anyone confirm this?
