Ideally what I want to do is keep data in users' personal archives permanently and prevent users from accidentally deleting items out of it, thus limiting the possibility of data loss or having to restore from a backup. It seems however that I cannot change the permissions on archive mailboxes to deny delete permissions, nor can I set a retention period on the recoverable items folder higher than 30 days. Single Item Recovery is helpful but doesn't prevent data from eventually being purged. The only way to ensure data is kept indefinitely that I have found is to place a hold on the mailbox. Is it advisable though to place holds on everyone's archive mailboxes? Is there any other method of accomplishing my goal, or is my best bet just to enable Single Item Recovery, set the deleted item retention to the max of 30 days, and restore email from backups if anything makes it past that?
