Exchange 2010 cluster and VSS writer errors

$

Hi-

We have Exchange2010 with 3 CAS/Hub servers and 3 mailbox servers in a DAG - all are VMWare VMs. One of the mailbox servers just has some passive copies; two of the mailbox servers have active and passive copies and do the backups. We use EMC Networker 8.1 with the Networker Module for Microsoft Applications for backups. Those backups run successfully most of the time.

I'm experiencing the following issue:

Occasionally, the backups fail, and the next morning the system logs on the mailbox servers have cluster related errors. Also, VSSadmin shows the Exchange writer in a retryable error state. The backups will continue to fail until the writers are reset with a reboot.

This morning, the backup did NOT fail, but there were cluster related errors, causing me to check the writers on the mailbox servers. They were again in the error state.

The event logs point to a network error, but I assume the failure of the cluster could be related to unresponsive machines. I've asked our infrastructure team to investigate, and they have found no indication of a problem at the network, vm, or storage level.

Has anyone seen this, or could point me to diagnostic information?

Thanks

Shared Mailbox Permissions

We've had users deleting messages out of a shared mailbox. We cannot have users removing messages. Currently they have FullAccess on the Shared Mailbox. I'm working in PowerShell and trying the commands:

Add-MailboxPermission -Identity xxx@xxx.com -User xxx@xxx.com -AccessRights ReadPermissions

However, I cannot open the mailbox via Outlook or OWA.

I've also tried:

Add-MailboxFolderPermission -Identity xxx@xxx.com:\Inbox -User xxx@xxx.com -AccessRights ReadItems

Neither of those commands are allowing users to open the mailbox to view the messages. The only way I get get the shared mailbox to open on another user account (via Outlook or OWA) is to give them FullAccess.

Are there any other options, or can I actually get the results I want? We're using Office 365, but it's Exchange 2013.

Thank you.

I have installed Exchange 2013 on new server & migrated all accounts to new server including the arbitration & discovery ones. & after that I shutdown previous Exchange server 2013 to check everything is working fine. After shutdown the server I am able to send mails outside but I am unable to receive emails from outside of organization. It would be great if you can let me know if I missing something or not migrated any mailbox (delivery)... please suggest me what to do?

Database filter not working in Powershell command

I'm trying to run a powershell query to find what users have a retention policy applied to them. However, I'm also trying to filter out a database that contains service accounts, which should be excluded. The issue I'm running into is that the database filter doesn't seem to be working. if I use "database -ne mydb" I get all accounts, including from that db. If I use "database -eq mydb" I get zero results. I can see on the MS doc about filterable properties that this is one of them that should work with get-mailbox. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb738155(v=exchg.150).aspx

Can anybody point me towards what I have wrong in this command:

Get-Mailbox -ResultSize unlimited -Filter {(ManagedFolderMailboxPolicy -eq $null) -and (database -ne "Service Accounts - DAG")} | fl name,database

I'm running exchange 2010 but I can't seem to find the right forum for that, is it in the archives somewhere?

Thanks in advance,

Joel

Exchange 2013 EAC Service Pack 1 New mailbox cannot see all OUs when selecting Browse with "Exchange Organization Management " permissions

Single forest 2 Domains. When I go to create a new mailbox in the Exchange Admin  Centre and "Browse" the Organizational Unit. I can only see a few OU in the Parent Domain and most in the Child Domain. I have tried "expand All" and cannot see anywhere in the EAC to set a "Recipient Scope". The account I am using has "Exchange Organization Management" rights and is a Domain Admin as well. The Exchange servers are members of the Root Domain.

In the "Select an Organizational Unit" menu there is a message "There are more results available than are currently displayed". I have tried searching as well and cannot find OUs that I should be able to.

All the servers have had Exchange 2013 Service pack 1 installed.

Any suggestions?

John

Exchange 2013 - Client Access Servers - Disk Space C:\ Running Low Space

$

Currently having an issue with both of our client access servers with exchange 2013.

The issue is that the C:\ drive will run low on disk space on one of the cas server and the other one will be fine.  We have cleaned up all the logs etc to free space on the cas server that is running low on space but its not sufficient enough as it keeps on running low on space, then what we do the free up the space is to reboot the cas server that runs low on space, and it free the space up after it has been restarted, then the other cas server starts running low on space.

has anyone seen this before?

Exchange 2013 stops receiving external email after about 8 hours

Hello,

Just installed 2013 excahnge server 3 days ago. We noticed after the first night that we did not receive any external emails throughout the night.  I could not find anything wrong with receive connectors.  Telnet works internally when this happens but NO access from public side testing with telnet.  After I reboot the exchange server everything functions just fine and normal for about 8 hours until it happens again.

I dont know what to check or look for at this point.  Very new to exchange 2013.  Any kind of advice would be helpful at this time.

It is not a firewall issue.  Same firewall and set of rules that we use for other/old mail servers.  We only have 1 exchange server that has all roles.

Exchange 2013 Monitoring Mailboxes

I'm running exchange 2013 and it seems to have problems with health mailboxes (monitoring mailboxes). I have 5 mailbox databases on this server, DB1, DB2, DB3, DB4 and DB5.

I know there are 2 health mailboxes per mailbox database.

The command `Get-Mailbox -monitoring | Get-MailBoxStatistics` shows that several of these have not been accessed since December, even though they are in mounted Databases and powershell shows they are healthy.

There is also 2 health mailboxes that are missing from the below output because I got warninings saying these mailboxes have not been logged into yet.

I am also getting a lot of queued messages in the inboundproxy.com queue that have the subject line "Undelieverable: Inbound Proxy Probe". I dont know how to get these to stop. I just have to clean out the queue once a day to prevent it from getting to large.

The last thing I notice is that I get a lot of audit errors in the event log when the system is trying to login to these mailboxes. That might be what is causing the issue. Here is one of the messages:

This event is generated when a logon request fails. It is generated on the computer where access was attempted.

The Subject fields indicate the account on the local system which requested the logon. This is most commonly a service such as the Server service, or a local process such as Winlogon.exe or Services.exe.

The Logon Type field indicates the kind of logon that was requested. The most common types are 2 (interactive) and 3 (network).

The Process Information fields indicate which account and process on the system requested the logon.

The Network Information fields indicate where a remote logon request originated. Workstation name is not always available and may be left blank in some cases.

The authentication information fields provide detailed information about this specific logon request.
- Transited services indicate which intermediate services have participated in this logon request.
- Package name indicates which sub-protocol was used among the NTLM protocols.
- Key length indicates the length of the generated session key. This will be 0 if no session key was requested.

-----

As you can see, the system can not login to to this health mailbox account. The one in my example one of the mailboxes that has not been logged into since december.

Is there anywhere to troubleshoot these? or possibly rebuild them? The is a huge lack of documentation on these mailboxes from microsoft, I  can not find any commands to interact with these other then 'get-mailbox -monitoring'

Cross forest migration mailbox permissions

$

Hello

i am in an environment that is currently in the middle of a cross forest Exchange migration. The company is migrating user accounts to target AD forest, and then creating Linked mailboxes in the Source AD forest. They are also setting mailbox permissions on shared mailbox that live in the source forest to user accounts that now live in the target forest. My questions are

#1 how is it possible to translate mailbox folder permissions on a shared mailbox that lives in source forest to user accounts that now live in target AD forest?

#2 When a user account has been migrated to target forest, is the mailbox that lives in the source forest automatically configured as a "linked mailbox" ? or does this have to manually be configured?

ADMT is not being used, we are using the preparemoverequest script and MRSProxy (2013 exchange server installed in the source forest)

Thanks

Issues with setting up Exchange Server 2013

$

Hi All

Not sure what im doing wrong yet i am having issues with exchange server 2013.

Currently I have got general SMTP Mail flow working. as long as i log onto the local servers OWA (https://10.x.x.x/owa) i can log into a users mailbox. i have tested sending and recieving mail using this and it works.

My main issue now is with accessing the OWA externally via our website.  (owa.xx.xx.au/owa) or connecting ANY Outlook to the server.

When i connect to the exchange server via outlook it asks for the password again multiple times never authenticating it then time's out and says:

" the action cannot be completed. the connection to microsoft exchange is unavailable, outlook must be online or
connected to complete this action "

then when i click on OK it goes to the General Tab and under microsoft exchange server: the name for it appears as

0612bab0-7bfd-4ea2-ae31-3bec2370c8e1@xx.xx.au

with mailbox set as:

=SMTP:u.name@xx.xx.au

Currantly on our DNS i have

mx=  10  mail.xx.xx.au

CNAME= autodiscover  = mail.xx.xx.au

CNAME= OWA = mail.xx.xx.au

A = mail = 12.34.56.78

On our modem/router i have set one-to-one nat to our firewall IP

On our firewall i have

SMTP SAT and NAT to Exchange server
HTTPS Sat and NAT to exchange Server
HTTP Sat and Nat to exchange Server
Port 587 SAT and Nat to exchange server
pop SAT and NAt to exchange server

Im willing to bet its something stupid i have overlooked but i was wondering if anyone would be able to help me out

Regards

Sibsy
