Email enabled Non-universal Security groups - Exchange 2010 sp3
We noticed quite a few Non-universal distribution groups on EMC. We are now in the process of converting them to Universal groups. I'm curious to know if we can separate the email enabled non-universal security groups to a security and distribution group without losing the email address ?
I'm sorry if my question is unclear.

TargetFolder not available with New-MailboxSearch? Need powershell help
In an effort to remove some garbage such as MSNBC RSS Feeds, I've constructed a crude powershell command:
Get-Mailbox -Identity "user" | Search-Mailbox -SearchQuery "subject:'a OR the OR of'" -TargetFolder "MSNBC News" -TargetMailbox "superuser" -DeleteContent
Two problems, first that I don't need to limit the deletion to items with a certain subject line, but the command seems to fail without something plugged in there. I just want to remove everything in that folder.
Second problem, Search-Mailbox only deletes the first 10000 items it finds, posting a warning that I should be using New-MailboxSearch. But New-MailboxSearch doesn't support the TargetFolder parameter which allows me to target and empty the particular folder which needs to be emptied.
If possible, could a powershell wizard help by providing an example of how to delete content from an RSS feeds folder with a particular name which might contain over 100,000 items.
Thanks

Windows Updates on a DAG - inbound mail delayed??
Good afternoon, all!
Just finished updating my Exchange 2013 servers and ran across a circumstance I haven't seen before.
Topology: two datacenters with a Mailbox/CAS server in each, both are members of the DAG. These connect to two Edge Transport servers, one in each datacenter. The Edge - Mailbox/CAS server connections are cross-connected so any Edge can connect to any Mailbox/CAS server.
Ran updates on the two Edge servers - no problem. Used this document as a guide, starting at "Performing Maintenance on DAG members: for the two Mailbox/CAS servers. Started with the remote server, followed the guide, tested email during the procedures, mail flowed normally.
When I updated the primary server at our main datacenter, outbound mail continued to flow normally. However, inbound mail was held for about 20 minutes while the primary server completed Windows Updates and rebooted. As soon as I took the server out of maintenance mode, the inbound mail was delivered to the mailbox. I did check and the database was hosted and mounted on the secondary server. I don't have any custom receive connectors that may be
There were some inconsistencies in the output of Get-ServerComponentState for each server. However, when I tried to set the components active, they immediately went to Inactive. The primary server components all restarted after the patch reboot, and the cluster, after yelling at the reboot, shows both servers as up.
I can handle a planned outage of 20-30 minutes or so if necessary. However, the whole point to creating a DAG and having the redundant servers is precisely so that a mail outage won't happen. If this patch session is a gauge, it seems that inbound mail from the Internet may be delayed or bounced if an outage occurs.
What might I be missing in the inbound mail path? Are there other components that I should be checking for proper mail failover?
Thanks for looking!

Disable BCC in Ex2013
Hi!
Is there a way now in Exchange 2013 to disable or at least stop BCC at the server level if a user send it?
Thanks.
Email Address Policy
In our exchange environment we have an email address policy to give an address based on the Company field. This works for new mailboxes. Recently we found it does not work if the company field is changed in Active Directory Users and Computers for an existing user.
If I change the company field in ECP the change is immediate. The only way to get the change to come across from editing the account in Active Directory Users and Computers is to turn off "Automatically update e-mail addresses based on e-mail address policy"for the account and then turn it back on.
Anyone have any ideas to make this work?
We are running Exchange 2013 CU10. All mailboxes have "Automatically update e-mail addresses based on e-mail address policy" enabled.

Unusual Mailbox Database Growth
Hi all,
I manage a 2-servers DAG recently migrated from 2010 into 2013.
Each database is growing at a rate that I have not seen when it was on 2010. The DB's are growing at 5GB a week.
- The log files are OK. Backups are running OK and truncating them.
- Mailbox quotas are being enforced.
- Retention periods are similar to 2010
- In average, for each DB the sum of each individual mailbox plus the DB whitespace is strangely less than the whole DB size. I have a 215GB MBX DB size which contains 80GB in mailbox size + 10GB of whitespace. This does not make sense.
I can foresee issues in drive space in the next weeks so
Could you please point me to the right direction as to where do I have to look for toroubleshooting?
Thanks.
Exchange trying to resolve external e-mail addresses in local Active Directory
Hi
On all of my Mailbox Database servers, i'm getting the following warning in my Application log:
Level: Warning Source: MSExchange Mid-Tier Storage EventID: 2009 Message: [Process:w3wp PID:6032 Thread:89] Error occurred while resolving the Active Directory object for from email address field: 'user@externaldomain.com'. Audit log will not be generated for this case. Exception details: Microsoft.Exchange.Data.Storage.ObjectNotFoundException: The Active Directory user wasn't found. at Microsoft.Exchange.Data.Storage.ExchangePrincipalFactory.FromProxyAddress(IRecipientSession session, String proxyAddress, RemotingOptions remotingOptions) at Microsoft.Exchange.Data.Storage.ExchangePrincipalFactory.FromProxyAddress(ADSessionSettings adSettings, String proxyAddress, RemotingOptions remotingOptions) at Microsoft.Exchange.Data.Storage.ExchangePrincipal.FromProxyAddress(ADSessionSettings adSettings, String proxyAddress) at Microsoft.Exchange.Data.Storage.COWAudit.GetSubmitEffectiveMailboxOwner(MailboxSession session, CallbackContext callbackContext)
I have three Exchange Server 2013 MBX/CAS servers, and two Exchange Server 2013 Edge Transport servers in front of them.
As mentioned earlier, this warning is on all three of the MBX/CAS servers. The external e-mail address vary.
I've used the Get-MessageTrackingLog to debug, and I can see that this error comes when an internal user sends a "Meeting Forward Notification" to an external e-mail address. Exchange tries to resolve the external e-mail address in Active Directory and throws this warning, for some reason.
Is there anyone that knows how to fix this?
EmailAddressPolicy problem
Dear Members,
I faced with a strange (at least for me) problem regarding EmailAddressPolicy.
If I list the policies I get back the list:
[PS] C:\Windows\system32>Get-EmailAddressPolicy
Name Priority RecipientFilter

Default Policy Lowest Alias -ne $null
Custom - EAP 1 ((CustomAttribute1 -eq 'Custom...
But if I try to use the same command with -Identity:
[PS] C:\Windows\system32>Get-EmailAddressPolicy -Identity 'Custom - EAP'
The operation couldn't be performed because object 'Custom - EAP' couldn't be found on 'AD01'.
+ CategoryInfo : NotSpecified: (:) [Get-EmailAddressPolicy], ManagementObjectNotFoundException

Any idea what's wrong?

MAPI Session limits for objFolder and objFolderView
We have a email archiving solution that is hitting these MAPI limits. It's a problem with the vendor code where a new objFolder session is being created per message and it's not closing the connections when it's done. The vendor is slow to patch their products so we've been stuck with this issue for several months now. We're trying to move away from this product due to this issue among many others but we can't until we retrieve all of the archived items. We cannot retrieve all of our items due to hitting the MAPI session limits and the jobs failing.
In the meantime, I've been increasing the MAPI limits. I've increased the objFolder limits to over 8000 now. There hasn't seemed to be any performance issues or noticeable hits on the Exchange server or the archiving server. This has allowed the archiving to work again for most mailboxes but we have a couple of mailboxes that 20GB large and the limits are being hit again.
Does anyone know what the maximum limit that these MAPI session types can be set to? I can find the defaults here but there are no maximum limits shown (also this list is for 2007 and I'm assuming they are the same): https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff360476(v=exchg.140).aspx

Exchange Web Services landing page
Hi guys,
We're having issues integrating Skype for Business with our Exchange 2013 organization.
The SfB implementation team has requested that EWS url of https://autodiscover.contoso.com/EWS/exchange.asmx lands on https://autodiscover.contoso.com/ews/Services.wsdl instead of the default landing page of https://autodiscover.contoso.com/ews/exchange.asmx
I have checked in another client whose Lync is knwon working and it definitely does it that way. Also, I compared IIS settings, Authentication settings, Internal and External URL between both companies and cannot see an obvious different as to why it fails.
At the moment this is what I got when browsing to https://autodiscover.contoso.com/EWS/Exchange.asmx:
and SfB is expecting to see this:
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

SMTP device logs.
Hi All
We have an on-premise Exchange 2013 server which is used as a SMTP relay for sending emails via Office 365.
We've pointed numerous devices / applications at this server for SMTP email and works fine.
I would like to obtain a list of devices / applications which are sending emails via this Exchange server. Can someone point me in the right direction how i can extract this information and from which log? I guess it will be a list of IP Addresses which are sending messages via this server. That will be sufficient.
Thanks!
release emails from quarantine - error
Hi all,
I have taken over management of an Exchange server 2013 in one small organization. As their commercial antispam license was not prologned anymore, I set up common antispam rules, quarantine and all was OK. Until I found that there is not possible to release emails from quarantine. Let's describe conditions:
- Fully updated exchange 2013 on fully updated Server 2012R2
- my account is member of domain admins, organization admins, hygiene management, server management (well, it's "administrator" of an domain
- all other exchange functions working correctly, no error logs
- completely new quarantine mailbox was already set up
When I click "send again", I immediately get message "The orignal message could't be opened. Please try again later." Any ideas how to diagnose this in details? I run out of them...
Exchange 2013 - Admins can only log into one ECP server
Simple run down of my environment:
• Two AD sites (Site1 and Site2)
• One 2008 R2 domain controller at each site (DC1 w/ FSMOs and DC2) running AD forest function level 2008 R2
• One 2012 Std server with Exchange 2012 Std CU3 at each site (EX1 and EX2) – CAS/MBX on both, No DAG
• Half of mailboxes on each server
Using https://webmail.domain.com for all of our internal and external virtual directories. Adding /OWA or /ECP will get you into the respective site from either internal or external.
All Domain Admin/Exchange Admin (Organization Management) do NOT have mailboxes. Those individuals can log into ECP from https://webmail.domain.com/ecp, or FQDN or IP of EX2 only. If John Smith has no mailbox then he must use:
https://webmail.domain.com/ecp
or
https://ex2.domain.com/ecp
or
https://10.16.109.31/ecp
If EX2 goes offline or they use https://ex1.domain.com/ecp or https://10.16.108.31/ecp then none of the admins can login and they get the following:
Use the following link to open this mailbox with the best performance:
https://webmail.domain.com/owa/auth.owa
X-FEServer: EX2
Date: 2/18/2014 10:37:42 PM
s ECP or the https://webamil.domain.com/ecps ECP.
They can access EMS from either server and run Get-ECPVirtualDirectory and it shows what we would expect:
Why can an admin with no mailbox only log into the ECP on EX2? What is forcing the login to EX2 only? How can I move that “forced login” to EX1 if we ever get into a situation where EX2 is having problems? What happened in Active Directory or Exchange that made EX2 the primary login server for ECP and OWA? My FSMOs are located at Site 1…the same location where EX1 is located. The same server that I cannot log into ECP directly.

Retention settings vs retention tags/policies
Hi IT-Experts,
i have a (maybe) simple question regarding to retention tags, policies and settings, where i didnt find a solution yet.
I came up with the "problem", when i was recovering deleted e-mails with the Outlook-client. It seemed that there were to many objects, because i configured a retention tag, that should delete objects after 14 days permanently:
Of course i allocated this retention tag to a retention policy, which i allocated to my (all) mailboxes:
After some search, i found another configuration for keeping deleted items -> in Mailbox usage:
The last object i could recover from my deleted object was 90 days old, so the configuration in mailbox usage is applied.
So my question is: why is the retention setting in mailbox usage the applied one? Why is there a retention tag for deleted objects, when it doesnt get applied? What am i doing wrong?
Thank you, for your answer.
With kind regards
Sebastian Pohl

delivery report information for this message is no longer available
New on-site deployment part of Exchange 2010 upgrade. Both systems are currently co-existing. Trying to use Delivery Reports to track a message. When I click on the message in Search Results, the Delivery Report opens with the message, "Delivery report information for this message is no longer available."
Message tracking IS enabled. The message I want info on is about 10 minutes old.
Thanx
